2010 Toyota RAV4 Road Test Review
Take a large dose of practicality, add some efficiency and reliability, and a dash of fun. Mix well. What do you get?
The 2010 Toyota RAV4.
The RAV4 is one of the original compact SUVs, and has been a strong seller since it was introduced in North America in 1995. “RAV4” stand for Recreational Activity Vehicle with 4-wheel drive, although in Canada, 4-wheel drive is optional on most versions.
The RAV4 line-up is quite flexible, with no less than 11 versions available, plus numerous options. In 2-wheel drive trim, there’s the base 4-cylinder, the Sport, the Limited, the V6 Sport, and the V6 Limited. The 4-wheel drive lineup starts with the base 4-cylinder, and the Sport plus the Limited versions, followed by the base V6, the Sport V6 and the Limited V6. Starting price for the RAV4 is between $24,345 and $36,990, depending on which version you want.
My test vehicle was a Pacific Blue Metallic, 4-cylinder, 2-wheel drive Limited model.
The 4-cylinder is a peppy 2.5-litre, aluminum block engine which delivers 179hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. While I’m sure the 269hp and 246 lb-ft torque delivered from the 3.5-litre V6 would provide a bunch more get-up-and-go, the 4-cylinder was certainly more than willing around town, even when matched with the power robbing automatic transmission.
The Sport and Limited versions are essential option packages, each with varying features. Sport options are generally sportier, with a stiffer suspension setup and 18” alloy wheels as examples of what you get. The Limited version includes features such as 8-way power adjustable seats and a body-coloured spare tire cover. All versions of the RAV4 include driver and passenger side airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, 4-wheel ABS-enabled disc brakes and Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) systems.
The
RAV4 provides decent fuel efficiency, with something between an 8.3L/100km and 9.6L/100km combined city/highway usage rating, depending on the version.
2010 represents the 5th year of the current generation RAV4, although it did receive a modest facelift in 2009. Generally, the RAV4 remains unchanged for this year, but does offer a new Sport Appearance Package (available only on the Sport V6 4-wheel drive version) that includes a redesigned rear door with no spare tire, a chrome exhaust tip and various chrome trim items. It also includes run-flat tires.
Around town, the RAV4 feels nimble, if not spirited. It responds well to steering and throttle input, and competently handles road bumps. I can’t say that it was thrilling to drive, but then what car as practical as this offers dynamic handling? In most parts of Canada, the 4-wheel drive version will help to manage winter road conditions, but if you plan to stay home on those especially-wintry days, the 2-wheel drive version will likely be adequate.
Inside, the driver controls are useful and easy to locate. The seats and seating position are comfortable. The rear seats of 5-occupant models are big enough for most adults, and include a fold-down centre armrest with two cupholders. In the back, the RAV4 offers 35.9 cubic feet (1.015 cubic metres), of cargo space with the rear seats down, or an impressive 73.2 cubic feet (2.074 cubic metres) with the seats up. A seven-occupant version is available, and while really tight for adults, the 3rd row is ideal for kids.
The
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has selected the RAV4 as a “Top Safety Pick” with “good performance in front, side and rear [crash] tests”. JD Power and associates rates the RAV4 as 4 out of 5 for vehicle dependability. Similar cars to consider against the RAV4 are the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Rogue.
The utility of the RAV4, combined with Toyota’s reputation for reliability make it a top pick for those seeking a small-sized SUV with big-size practicality. It will continue to be a strong candidate in this category, and is worth taking a closer look.
